Christmas Tableaux 2021クリスマス・タブロー

One of the biggest event at St Viator Rakusei High School is the Christmas Tableaux. The name sounds a little strange because it is the mixture of English and French. In Japan English is taught at school but the missionaries come from the French-speaking area of Canada. So all of us at our St Viator School call it like "Christmas Tableaux."
洛星中学校・高等学校での大きな行事の中に『クリスマス・タブロー』があります。英語とフランス語が混ざっているので、ネーミング自体は少しかわっていると思われるかもしれませんが、学校で英語しか習わない日本と、カナダのフランス語圏出身者の修道会士たちの折衷案だったのかもしれません。だから生徒・教職員全員がこの名前で呼んでいます。

This is normally open to everyone, so as many as 2000 people come and pray with us. But owing to the Covid-19, it was completely closed to the audience in the year 2020, and in 2021 only to the parents of the cast and the staff of the stage.
この行事は例年ならば誰にでも来ていただけるものなので、2000人を超える人たちが来られて、一緒にこのご降誕のお話を祈りをもってむかえます。しかしこの2年はコロナ感染防止のため、2020年度は完全に観客なしで、2021年度はこの行事に関わった生徒の保護者の方々だけにきていただいて行いました。

Over 400 students are involved in this event every year, which is almost all planned and performed by the students. But one of the associates, who has been the chief of the Religous Department of this school, who is Mr Nozomi NISHIO this year, directs it with the support of the other teachers mainly who graduated from this St Viator School and the other associate members.
毎年、キャスト・スタッフを含め、400人以上の生徒たちがこの上演に関わっていますが、そのほとんどが生徒たちが主体的に計画し、上演しています。準会員で宗教部長（西尾望先生が長く務められています）がこの上演の中心にいて、卒業生を中心とする他の先生方や他の準会員と指揮をとっています。

Japan is not a Christian country, where most people do not know much about Christianity and the Bible. Many people even think Christmas is just a good opportunity for parties in the winter. So this kind of performance is very important for us the Viatorians in Japan because we can show them what Christmas really is by performing this beautiful pageant with music.
日本はキリスト教国ではありませんので、キリスト教や聖書のお話はそれほど詳しくは知られていません。たくさんの人たちは、クリスマスとは冬にパーティをするいい機会にしか思っていない人たちもいるくらいです。だからこのように音楽を交えて美しく上演することは、日本の人たちにクリスマスの本当の意味を知っていただけるいい機会なので、日本のヴィアトール会員にはとても重要です。

As you see in the picture, every student wore a mask. It was really hard this time in this Covid-19 environment. But the students involved in this event must deeply have understood the real meaning of Christmas and will tell the Good New to people around them.
写真で見ていただけるように、生徒は全員マスクをつけて上演を行っています。換気体制もとてもきめ細やかに考えてくれていました。このようなコロナ禍での実施は本当に大変なものだったのですが、こうして誠意を込めて祈りの中で上演する中で、生徒たちはイエスのご降誕の意味を深く理解し、福音を広めていってくれることと信じています。

The School Trip 2021 中学3年生研修旅行

I am Tomoaki Francisco Kimura, one of the associate members at St Viator Rakusei School. I am currently the head of the ninth grade teachers and in charge of the student religious education. Today's article is about the school trip to Nagasaki with my students last November.
準会員の木村智昭です。現在中学3年生の学年主任をしていて、この学年の宗教教育を担当しています。今日は１１月にあった研修旅行について書きます。

As St Viator School is a mission school, we take the ninth graders to Nagasaki, the religious center of Japan for the Japanese Catholics. During this trip, they learn about three main themes: the history of the Japanese Christians, peace learned from the victims of the Atomic Bomb dropped on Nagasaki, and the magnificent power of nature, especially focusing the volcanoes of Mt Aso and Mt Fugen, which brought such big disasters. Since Mt Aso began to be active again some years ago, we haven't been able to visit Aso anymore. And because of the Covid-19 we have shortened the trip by one day by cutting the visit to Mt Fugen, so the trip this year concentrated on Nagasaki, the history of the Japanese Christians and the victims of the Atomic Bomb.
洛星はミッション・スクールなので、中学3年生は長崎に研修旅行にでかけました。本来、研修旅行の学習テーマは、日本のクリスチャンの歴史、原子爆弾投下から学ぶ平和教育、そして阿蘇や普賢岳の自然の畏怖の念の3つでしたが、阿蘇が活動が活発になってからは阿蘇には行っていませんし、今回はコロナ禍でもあったので、日程を短縮し、長崎だけの訪問となりました。

The two main events of this trip are the visit to the Atomic Bomb Memorial Museum with the lecture by an Atomic Bomb victim, and the mass at Urakami Church, the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Nagasaki.
この旅行の2つのメイン行事は、原爆記念館を訪問し、そこで実際の犠牲者の方からお話を聞くことと、長崎大司教区司教座聖堂の浦上天主堂で平和ミサを受けることです。

The trip time was very short, so the schedule was very tight this time. It took us four hours to go from Kyoto to Nagasaki. After we got to Nagasaki, first we visited the Atomic Bomb Memorial Museum. The students had learned a lot in advance about the history before and after the Atomic Bomb was dropped, they visited the museum with great interest and listened really attentively to the story the victim told them.
旅行期間が短縮されたため、今回の旅行はあまり余裕のないものとなりました。京都からの約四時間の移動の後すぐに原爆記念館に行きました。事前学習をしていたので、生徒達は展示品をとても興味深く見ていましたし、犠牲者のお話に熱心に耳を傾けていました。

The next morning, we prayed together in the Mass for Peace, celebrated by Fr William, at Urakami Cathedral. The students were very moved in the big Cathedral with a lot of beautiful stained glass. While not a professional organist, I played the organ for the mass. I may not have played perfectly but the sound of the organ in the large Cathedral was also moved students. Some of them were kind enough to tell me this afterward...(^^;)
翌朝、浦上天主堂でウィリアム神父司式の平和ミサを受けました。司教座聖堂がとても大きく、美しいステンドグラスで飾られていたので、生徒達はとても感動していました。オルガニストがいなかったので、私が下手ながら奏楽を担当しましたが、この広い大聖堂で響き渡るオルガンの音は、下手な私が弾いても、生徒達には感動的だったようです。

We visited the Memorial Meseum of the 26 Martyrs, too (http://www.26martyrs.com/). We listened to the explanation by the manager and prayed together in the special church attached.
日本26聖人殉教者記念館も訪れ、教会でお話を聞き、お祈りをしました。

Toward the end of the trip, we visited a remote site, which is now registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (http://kirishitan.jp/components_en/com005), where a lot of Christians kept faith in God in the trying times under the ban on Christianity and after that, and learned their lives there with the help of Fr Marc Marie de Rotz.
最後の訪問地は隠れキリシタンの里黒崎にある遠藤周作文学館と出津です。今年度は遠藤周作の『女の一生第２部』や『沈黙』を国語の時間に随分時間をかけて扱ってくださいましたので、生徒達は一生懸命見学をしていました。

Just as Nagasaki was the first step of Christianity in Japan, we believe St Viator School is also the first step for it in Kyoto. Most of our students are raised in the typical Japanese non-Christian environment, so these kinds of activities are a very important mission to us the Viatorians in Japan.
長崎が日本のキリスト教の第一歩であったように、洛星も京都におけるキリスト教福音宣教の第一歩の地でもあります。大部分の生徒達はキリスト教文化にない日本で育っていますから、こうした活動は私たちヴィアトール会にとっては重要な活動です。

Urakami Cathedral. School groups and tourists visiting Urakami Cathedral can only see it from the entrance hall. But as a Christian mission school, we very much wanted to celebrate mass there and have been given permission to do so. Our students' respectful demeanor is always praised by the church staff.
